AL activist stabbed by rival party men
A Swechchhasebak League leader was stabbed by party rivals in Chatmohar upazila early yesterday.
Critically injured Md Khalequzzaman Khaleque, 41, convener of Chatmohar upazila unit of Awami Swechchhasebak League, is undergoing treatment at Pabna Medical College Hospital.
Khaleque claimed that the supporters advocate Shakhawat Hossain, president of Chatmohar upazila unit of AL, stormed into his house at the upazila headquarters at around 2:00am and stabbed him.
“Shakhawat's men swooped on me when I was asleep in a room,” he said.
Officer-in-Charge Md Asaduzzaman Munshi of Chatmohar Police Station said there was a longstanding conflict between Khaleque and Shakhawat over establishing supremacy at the upazila headquarters.
The attack on Khaleque was a sequel to the conflict, the OC said, adding that the Swechchhasebak League leader did not file any case with the police station as of 6:00pm yesterday.
Refuting the allegation, Shakhawat said party men were not involved in the incident. He demanded punishment of the attackers.
“As I am seeking party ticket to contest the upcoming parliamentary election from Pabna-3 constituency, rivals are hatching conspiracy to tarnish my image,” he added.
AL men are divided into two groups in Pabna-3 constituency-one led by incumbent lawmaker Mokbul Hossain and the other by Shakhawat Hossain.
