12 held with 3 lakh Yabas

Rapid Action Battalion arrested 12 alleged smugglers with three lakh Yaba tablets from a trawler in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin's Island under Cox's Bazar district yesterday afternoon.
On a tip-off, the Rab team also seized the trawler in the drive, said Lt Col Miftah Uddin Ahmed, commander of Rab-7.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Delwar Hossain, in-charge of Cox's Bazar camp of Rab, said all the arrested persons were Bangladeshis.
Youth found dead in capital

Police recovered the body of an unidentified youth, who was stabbed in the chest and abdomen, from Rustompur area adjacent to Mirpur embankment in the capital yesterday.
The body of the youth clad in jeans pants and a yellow T-shirt was sent to Dhaka Medical Collage morgue for an autopsy, said Rupnagar police.
JCD calls for two-day strike at CU

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) of Chittagong University unit yesterday called a two-day student strike on the university campus from today.
JCD announced the strike demanding political co-existence on the campus and protesting ongoing arrest of BNP and JCD leaders and activists and repression on them, said a press release.
Earlier, the organisation enforced a two-day countrywide student strike on January 19-20 protesting the killing of Nuruzzaman Johnny, Khilgaon JCD general secretary.
24 additional district judges, chief judiciary magistrates promoted

The government yesterday promoted 24 additional district judges and chief judiciary magistrates to the post of district and sessions judges.
The promotions had been given on the advice from the Supreme Court, law ministry sources said.
The ministry issued a notification in this regard.
13 straw huts gutted in Ctg fire

Fire gutted 13 thatched houses in Halishahar area of Chittagong city yesterday morning.
The fire originated from the oven at a house at Hindu Para in the area soon spread to adjacent houses around 8:40am, said Fire Service officials.
Fire fighters doused the fire after around one hour and estimated the damage at Tk 7 lakh.
Barisal digital innovation fair starts

A three-day digital innovation fair began yesterday on Barisal Aswini Kumar Hall premises aiming to build a digital Bangladesh.
Barisal district administration and Access to Information Programme under the Prime Minister's Office organised the fair which accommodated 18 stalls.
Jebunessa Afroj, lawmaker of Barisal-5, Md Gous, Barisal divisional commissioner and Sahidul Alom, deputy commissioner, were present at the fair.
Int'l confce on archives and records management held

International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) organised an international conference on archives and records management in Bangladesh on Saturday.
It was held to spread the idea of improving records and archives in different organisations for better governance and to provide a platform for researchers.
Wadudul Bari Chowdhury, director of Directorate of Archives and Libraries under the cultural affairs ministry and M Alimullah Miyan, IUBAT founder vice-chancellor were present.
Man held with 1,722 Yabas in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a man with 1,722 Yaba tablets, worth Tk 7.74 lakh, from Bahaddarhat area of Chittagong city yesterday.
The arrestee is Md Selim, 37, of Cox's Bazar.
On information, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in a hotel around 1:00pm and arrested Selim with the tablets, said police.
A case was filed.
