Female student dies 'in elevator shaft fall' in capital

A female student recently accepted into Dhaka University's marketing department died after allegedly falling down a six-story empty elevator shaft at a friend's residence in the capital's Azimpur near China Building yesterday evening.
Nazat Saheda Shakta, 18, is the daughter of Associate Prof Mahjabeen Haque of Dhaka University's education and counselling psychology, residing in Fuller Road.
Severely injured, she was taken to Dhaka Medical College where doctors declared her dead.
Lalbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Muttakin said they were investigating whether there was foul play.
Another grenade found at Ctg factory

One more grenade was found at GPH Ispat Ltd in Kumira of Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong on Sunday.
Workers of the steel factory noticed the grenade in the heap of imported scrap metal, said police. Another grenade was found there on Saturday.
Two AUW students selected for Unilever scholarship

To demonstrate Unilever's faith in empowering women, two meritorious students of the Asian University for Women (AUW), Chittagong have been selected for the Unilever Scholarship.
The students -- Fariha Mostafa and Kazi Sumaitra Nahar from the class of 2018 -- will get academic expenses for the four year undergraduate programme from 2014 to 2018 at AUW.
Two commit 'suicide' in Ctg

Two persons allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling in Chittagong city yesterday.
Koli Akther, 17, of Pahartali area, and Ashim Biswas, 35, of EPZ area, were found dead in their homes. Police sent the bodies to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsies.
Two bodies recovered in Savar

Police yesterday recovered the body of a boy from a lake near his house at Kaliaghat in Dhamrai five days after he had gone missing. The victime was Asif Dewan, 11, son of Saiful Islam.
Meanwhile, another unidentified youth's body was found under Dautia Bridge on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Dhamrai. Miscreants might have dumped his body after strangling him, said police.
Road crashes kill two, injure 23

Two people were killed and 23 others injured in road accidents yesterday and Sunday.
In Comilla, Osman Goni, 23, of Shalpa Pennai village died another was injured when a bus rammed into a tractor on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Kutumbapur area of Chandina upazila on Sunday.
In Bhola, Deloar Hossain Patoari, 6o, of Sonapur village died and 22 people were injured when a bus hit a roadside tree as the driver lost control over the vehicle on Bhola-Charfassion road near Sadapul area in Lalmohan upazila yesterday.
Diagnostic centre owner, technician jailed for fraud

A mobile court yesterday sentenced the owner and a technician of a diagnostic centre in the capital's Mohammadpur area to different terms of imprisonment for providing fake pathology reports.
Abdul Baki Bakul, 40, owner of National Diagnostic Complex and Specialist Consultation Centre, was sentenced to one-year imprisonment while technician Samayan Ali, 22, was sentenced to six months, said Executive Magistrate AHM Anwar Pasha, who led the court.
The court also fined Bakul Tk 2 lakh and Samayan Tk 1 lakh, in default to serve three more months in jail.
The centre does not have a pathologist and provided pathology reports without conducting any test.
Body of missing boy found

The body of a boy was found in an underground water tank in Dakkhin Khan of the capital yesterday, two days after he went missing.
The deceased was Farhad, 8, of Kashimpur in Gazipur district. Dakkhin Khan police said Farhad, who was visiting relatives, went missing on November 22.
The body bore no injury marks and police have no clue about how it got to the water tank of an under-construction building. The body was sent for an autopsy.
Fire guts three shops in Ctg

Fire gutted three tin-shed thatched shops at Chawkbazar in Chittagong city yesterday.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at one of the three shops in Kapasgola area around 2:00am was doused after half an hour, said fire service officials.
The damage caused by the fire was estimated at Tk 2 lakh.
