Bangladeshi expat found dead

A Bangladeshi expatriate, who used to live in the United Kingdom, was found dead in his Banani residence in the capital yesterday.
Mejba Uddin Ahemd, 72, had been living alone in his flat since his arrival on November 3.
Deceased's relatives broke open the door after they failed to reach him over the phone since Thursday night, said police. The body was found lying, beside his bed, on the floor from which some bloodstains were also found.
Dhaka Medical College Morgue sources said a cut was found in the lower lip and the right eye was blackened.
DU students to get loans for laptops

The government will provide the first year students of Dhaka University with basic trainings on website development and graphics design and with loans at low interest rate to buy laptops.
A decision was taken in a meeting between Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique and Trust Bank Managing Director Ishtiaque Ahmed Chowdhury on November 17 at the VC's office, official sources said.
1971 role-playing Indian ship being scrapped

India's first aircraft carrier, Indian Navy Ship (INS) Vikrant which played a key role in the 1971 Liberation War by enforcing a naval blockade of the then East Pakistan, is being dismantled at a shipbreaking yard at Darukana in south Mumbai.
“We began the process of breaking INS Vikrant yesterday," said Abdul Zaka of IB Commercial (IBC), which bought the ship. Defence sources said over 60 percent of artefacts onboard have been moved to the Maritime History Society in Mumbai while the rest to other museums and motivational centres including Naval Aviation Museum in Goa.
Fire breaks out in Ctg paper mill

A fire broke out in a paper mill at Kalurghat BSCIC industrial zone in Chittagong city yesterday morning.
It originated from an electric short circuit in the warehouse of “Mir Paper Mill”, said Bishantar Barua of Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room.
Two fire fighting units from Kalurghat and Agrabad stations doused the blaze around 11:00am, he said, adding that the loss caused by the fire was estimated at about Tk 7 lakh.
No casualty was reported.
Nepalese youth held in Mymensingh

Border Guard Bangladesh arrested a Nepalese youth in Koroitali frontier area of Haluaghat upazila in Mymensingh Thursday night for intruding into Bangladesh.
Akhtar Raza, 25, son of Habib Momin, hails from Etharwa village in Nepal.
He entered into the country through the border four days ago to visit his father-in-law's house in Koroitali, Imarat Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Haluaghat Police Station, quoted Akhtar as saying.
Woman, son drown in Pabna

Bodies of a woman and her five-month-old boy, who drowned in a pond at Lamkan village in Bhagunra upazila of Pabna on Thursday, were recovered yesterday.
Quoting the family, police said Salma Khatun, 30, was mentally ill and drowned with her son Shakil.

Police suspect that Meem, daughter of Md Manik, was hit by an unidentified vehicle.
Woman killed by 'husband'

A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her husband at Debipur in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Thursday night.
Police suspect that Babul Miah, 40, went into hiding after hacking Delwara Begum, 35, with a kitchen knife over family feuds. The body was sent to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy yesterday.
Seminar on language starts at RU

A two-day long seminar on “Language Policy and Language-Planning of Bangladesh” started at Rajshahi University yesterday.
Prof Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University addressed the seminar as the keynote speaker.
Institute of Bangladesh Studies of the university organised the programme marking its 40th anniversary.
Justice ABM Khairul Haque, chairman of Bangladesh Law Commission, addressed the inaugural ceremony of the seminar as the chief guest. RU Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin also spoke.
Jubo Dal chief Alal freed from jail

Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal was released on bail from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur yesterday in a case filed against him for planning to carry out subversive activities during the hartal on October 26.
The High Court granted him one year bail in the case on November 17.
Police arrested Alal along with 62 activists of the BNP and its front organisations from his Lalmatia residence in the capital on October 25.
