Cambodia rivals reconcile

Cambodia's main opposition party yesterday struck a deal with strongman premier Hun Sen to end its year-long boycott of parliament triggered by a disputed election. The Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) said it had agreed to break the deadlock and take up its seats in the National Assembly in return for a promise of electoral reforms. It had refused to join parliament since elections in July 2013, accusing Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party of stealing victory with widespread vote-rigging.
Boko Haram kills dozens in Nigeria

A days-long raid on a northeast Nigerian town by Boko Haram left dozens dead and displaced more than 15,000 residents, Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency reports. Scores of fighters armed with rocket-propelled grenades, explosives and guns descended on the town of Damboa early Thursday evening. By the time the raid ended on Sunday, 66 residents had been killed and more than 15,000 had fled it added.
Turkey purges dozens of top cops

Turkish authorities yesterday arrested dozens of senior police officers in a criminal probe over alleged illegal wire-tapping and forgery, the latest crackdown on opponents of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of presidential polls. A total of 67 serving and former top police officers were arrested, prosecutors said in a statement.

China eyes to increase investment in Cuba

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Cuba yesterday to expand investment in the fellow communist nation, his last stop on a four-country Latin American charm offensive. Xi has made a point during his tour of Latin America reaching out to countries often shunned by US and European investors, including Venezuela and Argentina as well as Cuba. Cuba began opening up its economy in 2008.
World marks hottest June since 1880

Last month was the hottest June since record-keeping began in 1880, according to a monthly report out Monday by US government climate scientists. The combined average temperature over land and ocean surfaces was a "record high for the month at 61.20 Fahrenheit (16.22 Celsius)," said theorganisation.
