Another Swine flu case found
Swine flu infection cases in the country rose to 28 as one more person was found infected with the H1N1 virus on Friday.
A traveller who has returned from Indonesia was diagnosed positive for the strain at Zia International Airport, Prof Mahmudur Rahman, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, confirmed yesterday.
Eleven of the infected persons were stated to be at the secondary stage of the pandemic disease. That is, they were infected through close contact with the person having swine flu.
The first case of swine flu infection in the country was detected on June 18.
However, all the patients except two have been cured by this time, said Prof Mahmudur while talking to the press at a dissemination workshop on Core Capacity Assessment for Implementation of International Health Regulation (IHR) 2005 in Bangladesh.
He also said that the IHR is required for all the countries and they all should assess their capacity.
Duangvadee Sungkhobol, country representative of WHO, said that the IHR 2005 aims at providing a legal framework for the prevention, detection and containment of public health risks at its source, before they spread across borders, through the collaborative actions of state parties and the WHO.
She said the state parties must have the capacity to detect public health events through a well-established national surveillance and response infrastructure. State parties are required to collaborate actively with each other, together with WHO, to mobilise the financial resources, she said.
Sungkhobol also said that the IHR 2005 came into effect in June 2007 and Bangladesh government is capable of meeting the requirements of IHR.
Dr Anwar Hossain Munshi, joint secretary of health ministry, Jahangir Alam Khan, director general of Livestock Department, and Hosne Ara Tahmin, additional director general of Health Directorate, and Dr Be-Nazir Ahmed of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, among others, spoke at the inaugural session.
