Newly married woman strangled by husband
A man strangled his newly married wife in the capital's Jatrabari early yesterday.
The victim was identified as Aklima Begum, 23.
Jatrabari police said 32-year-old Mainuddin came to the police station around 5:30am claiming that he had killed his wife over an altercation. Following his statement, police rushed to the rented house of Mainuddin's brother-in-law at North Jatrabari and recovered the body. The body was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Mainuddin tied the knot with Aklima only eight months ago.
Mainuddin said their marriage had not been happy. He claimed that his wife used to talk with a man over phone and allegedly developed an illicit relation with the man. He objected to that and relation between the husband and wife worsened, added Mainuddin.
He said on two occasions, following altercations, Aklima left for her village home at Banchharampur in Brahmanbaria district. However, he managed to persuade her and bring her back a month later, Mainuddin continued.
According to his initial statement to police, Mainuddin brought Aklima to his brother-in-law Wahiduzzaman's house at North Jatrabari Tuesday. There they had another round of altercation following which he strangulated Aklima to death at around 2:30am yesterday.
Victim Aklima's mother Majeda Begum alleged that at the time of her daughter's marriage with Mainuddin they agreed to give Tk 2 lakh in cash and five tolas of gold ornaments to Akilma's husband. So far they managed to give him Tk 1 lakh and the gold they promised. But Mainuddin kept creating pressure on Aklima for the remaining one lakh taka and used to beat her frequently for that.
She alleged that her daughter was killed for dowry, police said.
