Asian investor spirits down
Asian markets were mixed Tuesday as profit taking dented gains from the previous session, but investor confidence remained buoyed by positive corporate earnings outlooks.
TOKYO: Up 2.73 percent. The Nikkei-225 index rose 256.70 points to 9,652.02.
Markets took in their stride Prime Minister Taro Aso's decision to dissolve parliament for an August 30 general election that voter surveys show could bring an end to his ruling party's half-century of almost unbroken rule.
HONG KONG: Flat. The Hang Seng Index closed down 0.64 points at 19,501.73.
Investors struggled for clear direction after the market jumped sharply during the previous session, dealers said.
However, analysts said they expected the market to continue pushing higher.
SYDNEY: Flat. The S&P/ASX 200 picked up 0.4 points, or 0.01 percent, to 4,050.
SHANGHAI: Down 1.64 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, was down 53.71 points to 3,213.21.
TAIPEI: Up 0.21 percent. The weighted index closed up 14.48 points to 6,953.34.
Chinese Gamer International lost 5.0 percent to 476.0 and Soft World International was limit-down at 210.
SEOUL: Up 0.71 percent. The KOSPI ended up 10.48 points at 1,488.99.
The market extended its winning streak into a sixth consecutive session amid continuing optimism on company earnings.
SINGAPORE: Flat. The Straits Times Index (STI) closed 1.82 points, or 0.07 percent, lower at 2,454.33
JAKARTA: Up 1.91 percent. The Jakarta Composite Index gained 40.2 points to 2,146.55
KUALA LUMPUR: Down 0.4 percent. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index lost 4.55 points to 1,134.70
BANGKOK: Down 0.63 percent.The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) composite index dropped 3.84 points to close at 609.83 points
MANILA: Up 0.22 percent. The composite index rose 5.60 points to 2,593.5.
WELLINGTON: Up 1.85 percent. The benchmark NZX-50 index rose 52.28 points to 2,873.19.
Fletcher Building rose 22 cents to 7.04 dollars, Contact Energy was up 13 cents at 6.03.
MUMBAI: Down 0.85 percent. The benchmark 30-share Sensex fell 128.52 points to 15,062.49.
