$ 600m DFID support for road network
British development aid agency Department for International Development (DFID) yesterday assured Bangladesh of providing US$ 600 million for the proposed 'Road Fund' for development and maintenance of road network.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury gave the assurance when he called on Communications Adviser Maj Gen (Retd) MA Matin at his secretariat office.
The DFID will also extend help to the Bailey bridge sector, the high commissioner said.
During the meeting, the adviser and the envoy discussed issues of mutual interest and Bangladesh's communication sector, especially the progress of implementation of the DFID-financed projects in the Roads and Highways Department.
They emphasised the need for gearing up dynamism and working more efficiently to achieve the target for the development of roads and highways.
Communications Secretary Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, senior officials of the ministry and DFID chief in the high commission were present at the meeting.
