Biman staffs want their jobs back
Staffs of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, who had their jobs terminated under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme before the carrier turned into a public limited company (PLC), yesterday demanded their reinstatement.
They also threatened to go for tougher agitations if their demands are not met.
They placed their demands at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity.
KM Shah Alam, president of Biman Sramik League, said, “Our colleagues are leading a miserable life due to this Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). What had been done in the name of VRS is really inhuman.”
Alam, also the convener of the committee for demanding reinstatement of the Biman staff victimised by VRS, announced a token sit-in in front of Balaka Bhaban at 11:00am tomorrow to press home their demand.
Committee members Sahabur Rahman and SM Ikramullah and other employees, who lost their jobs because of VRS, were also present at the press conference.
“The scheme was implemented by forcing many of us to sign on printed forms. Many people were forced to sign the papers,” said Alam, also a victim to the scheme.
“On the other hand, more than 1700 people were employed on contract and casual basis after the VRS was implemented,” he said, describing the attempt as 'short-sighted, arbitrary and opaque'.
“We want our jobs back. It's painful to lose jobs and the way VRS was implemented is a crime against humanity,” said SM Ikramullah, a former cabin crew.
They also demanded punishment to those involved in the execution of the move.
