Father sues villagers for torture on son

A father filed a case with Gomostapur Police Station yesterday accusing some unidentified people of brutal torture on his son allegedly for shallow machine theft in the locality.
The victim was Tobarak, 33, a mechanic and son of Taimur Rahman of Boalia village under Gomostapur upazila.
The allegation is that Tobarak was hung with his hands tied from a tree on Boalia Girls High School premises and was brutally tortured in presence of union parishad Chairman and local Awami League leader Zillur Rahman. After a long-drawn torture locals handed Tobarak over to his father.
Locals and police said a gang of thieves stole six shallow machines from paddy fields at Shoilo Beel in the upazila on June 23.
Angry villagers of Boalia caught Tobarak from neighbouring Nandipur village on July 10 and kept him in union council custody in this connection, they said, adding that the torture incident took place the next day.
The union parishad chairman told The Daily Star that he had to be present there because the farmers of the areas were furious after losing the machines.
Officer-in-charge of Gomostapur Police Station Babor Ali said he was not present in the police station when the incident took place.
