Nahid Sultana: A talented singer from Khulna
Nahid Sultana, a post-graduate in English Literature from Government. B.L University College, Khulna, was positioned in the “Best Category” of “Srijonsheel Protiva Anweshon” by Bengal Foundation in October 2006. Recently she spoke to The Daily Star (TDS) about her dreams and more.
TDS: Who are your Gurus?
Nahid: Rashed Uddin Talukder, Ali Ahmed (Principal Music Director of Khulna Radio) and Ranjeet Saha.
TDS: What is your musical forte?
Nahid: I love Nazrul Sangeet, Classical and soft, melodious adhunik songs.
TDS: Tell us about your career in music and the inspiration behind your success...
Nahid: I have been ceaselessly practicing music for the last 22 years. My parents, teachers, friends and family continue to inspire me.
TDS: Who are your favourite artistes in terms of Bangla music?
Nahid: Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin, Subir Nandi, Syed Abdul Hadi, Shakila Zafar, Mitali Mukherji, Anila and Arnob from Bangladesh and Indrani Sen, Mousumi Bhoumik, Lopa Mudra and JoJo from Kolkata.
TDS: Give us a lowdown on your memorable performances and achievements.
Nahid: I was enlisted as a “Nazrul Sangeet” artiste in BTV in 1997. In 1998 I performed in a special Eid programme “Chhande O Gaane” on BTV. In 1996 I was champion in a competition, achieving first prize in all five categories, namely Rabindra, Nazrul, Lalon, patriotic and modern songs.
TDS: Which songs brought you to the notice of Bengal Foundation?
Nahid: “Sukh pakhire pinjira tor khule dilam aaj” by Mitali Mukherji and “Eki shonar aloye jibon bhoriye diley” by Sabina Yasmin.
TDS: What difference is there in terms of picking up the ropes of music between Dhaka and Khulna?
Nahid: Dhaka is Dhaka and cannot be compared to other parts of the country. Dhaka is blessed with prominent ustads, musical institutions, mass-media and above all connoisseurs of art, literature and music. We cannot even imagine such a platform in Khulna.
TDS: What is your dream?
Nahid: I want to sing the compositions of Bappa Majumder, Fuad and Habib Wahid. My dream is to dedicate myself to music.
