Robbers escape after gunfight with police
After an hour-long gunfight with the police in the Turag river near Mogrartek early yesterday, the robbers managed to escape by a trawler following technical glitches in the engine of the police boat.
Meanwhile, two firearms of the police that went missing during the gunfight were recovered from the river bed.
On receiving information that a gang of robbers was committing robbery in a Keraniganj-bound trawler on the river, police from Savar and Darussalam police stations, who were patrolling the river, rushed to the spot.
"Sensing the presence of the police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to fire back. But the robbers managed to escape by another trawler as the engine of the police boat suddenly went out of order. However, no casualty was reported in the incident," Officer-in-Charge AKM Nasirullah of Savar Police Station told The Daily Star.
Around 250 rounds of bullets were exchanged during the gunfight, the police said.
After the gunfight, Nayek Shafiq of Savar Police Station and another policeman of Darussalam police station found that their shotgun and 303 rifle went missing.
Later, the divers of the fire brigade recovered the firearms from the river bed in the morning.
Meanwhile, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-4) yesterday arrested 18 members of an inter-district robbers' gang from Hemayetpur in Savar.
Rab-4 Savar camp commander Lt Commander Ariful Islam said they arrested the robbers while the gang was preparing for a robbery on the highway.
