Govt mulls shifting of secretariat
The government is actively considering shifting the secretariat to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan told parliament yesterday.
In reply to a question from Awami League lawmaker KH Rashiduzzaman, the state minister said an agreement was signed in 1974 with David Wisdom and Associates, a representative of Louis I Kahn, to build national secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
As per the agreement, a design was prepared to build four nine-storied buildings with 10 blocks. The design was amended in 1999.
But the project has not been implemented due to various reasons, the state minister said.
In 1997, Ecnec approved a project involving Tk 732.53 crore and it was scheduled to be completed between 1998 and 2002. But the previous BNP government did not take any steps to implement the project, Mannan said.
He also said the present government is determined to implement all development projects taken during the tenure of the previous AL government from 1996 to 2001.
