High voltage lines pose danger to Tangail townsfolk
High voltage electric lines drawn over residential houses and electric towers set up on the yards adjoining houses at several place of Tangail municipality poses risk for the dwellers.
The 33 KV (kilovolt) power supply lines have caused a number of accidents, killing and injuring several people in the town, sources said.
Citing the danger, local people submitted petitions to different authorities including the local and head offices of the Power Development Board (PDB) for shifting the electricity lines but to no effect.
Ignoring the serious objection from the local residents, the electricity line was drawn over Beltiabari, Deola, Kodalia, Sabalia and Biswas Betka in the town in 1979, said locals and PDB sources.
The then PBD officials had assured the locals that the lines would be shifted to the roadside after construction of a grid sub-station at Bailla in the town within a short time. The sub-station was constructed in 1985 but the power supply line is yet to be shifted, locals said.
Accidents occur frequently as the high-powered electric wires have no insulation, Ali Asgar Khan, a resident of Deola area, said.
The risky power lines require immediate shifting, said M Ahmed Rana, general secretary of the proposed Electricity Customers Association.
When contacted, Tangail PDB Executive Engineer Sarwar Hossain said the electric lines over houses are causing problems for the dwellers but a big fund will be required for its shifting.
