BNP grassroots miss time frame

Almost half of the newly formed district convening committees of BNP have failed to submit full-fledged committees to the central committee for approval within the stipulated time frame that expired yesterday.
Party sources said about 35 out of 71 organisational district committees have submitted names of 51-member committees to the central office to get final approval.
According to the party leaders, most of the district committees could not prepare the full-fledged committees due to internal conflicts.
Even a number of district conveners including party chairperson's brother Saeed Iskandar, convener of Feni, are facing strong opposition from their committee members.
BNP's national standing committee, the highest policy-making forum of the party, announced names of conveners and a few joint conveners for the district committees on June 9 asking them to submit full-fledged 51-member committees by yesterday.
Asked about the failure of newly formed committees BNP Standing Committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman yesterday said the party would extend the time considering the ground realities.
“We reviewed all the things several times to resolve disputes created centring the convening committees and I hope these committees will be able to submit their full-fledged committees by this month,” he said while talking to The Daily Star.
BNP's central office sources said newly appointed conveners of Nilphamari, Kurigram, Naogaon, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Jessore, Magura, Narail, Bagerhat, Tangail, Mymensingh (north), Netrokona, Munshiganj, Sariatpur, Bandarban and Sylhet district committees submitted their full-fledged committees for approval.
The central committee has already approved a few committees and asked them to work as per the guidelines of the standing committee, said insiders.
According to the party decision the central committee must approve the full-fledged district convening committees and then those committees will form convening committees for upazila and municipality units after dissolving existing committees by July 15.
Most of the district conveners could not start their tasks due to internal conflict. Even a number of conveners have been declared unwanted by their party men in their respective areas.
