10 injured in BCL factional clashes
Ten students of Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramic (Diploma engineering) at Tejgaon in the city were injured in a series of clashes between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday.
During the two-hour long clashes from 2:00pm, the feuding groups also vandalised around 20 rooms of the lone dormitory of the institute, prompting the authorities to close the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hostel sine die.
The resident students vacated the dormitory by 7:00pm as the authorities asked them to leave it within half an hour.
Witnesses said some 25 BCL activists of Murad faction attacked rival faction leader Quayyum Khan around 1:30am, leaving him severely injured.
As the news spread on the campus, followers of Quayyum equipped with iron rods and cricket stamps stormed into the rooms of the followers of Murad, leading to clashes.
Four of the injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and two were taken to Al-Razi Hospital at Farmgate.
Students said Quayyum, who was earlier the organising secretary of the institute unit of JCD, realised several lakh taka from freshers by arranging their admission into the institution as an influential JCD leader.
Campus sources said many of the students who paid him money have joined BCL and have now been demanding their money back from Quayyum.
