Trapped deer slaughtered at CU allegedly at the instruction of a teacher

A deer was slaughtered early yesterday on the south campus of Chittagong University (CU) allegedly at the instruction of a teacher of Islamic studies department.
Prof AFM Aminul Haque, chairman of the department, however, defended his act, saying the deer got badly injured after being trapped in an iron fence and had little chance to survive. So I asked an employee to slaughter it.”
Campus sources said the 'medium-size' deer was grazing with a herd of fellow deer at the sanctuary of the university near the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences. The deer somehow got detached from others, lost its way and at one stage its leg got stuck with the iron fence of a nursery of the institute.
They said Prof Aminul noticed the trapped deer at around 5:30am. Instead of trying to release the animal from trap, he summoned Mohammad Abdus Salam, the chef of the dining hall of the institute, and ordered him to slaughter it. Salam followed the order and then shared venison.
Hearing the news, CU security personnel rushed to the spot and recovered hide of the deer from Salam's house at around 9:00am.
Prof Jasimuddin, acting director of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, said they suspended Salam for killing the deer.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Abu Yusuf told The Daily Star that the university authorities would soon form a body to investigate the matter. “Action will be taken against those involved in the killing of the deer,” he said.
