16 Shibir activists held in Rajshahi
Police arrested 16 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) during raids on student messes near Rajshahi University (RU) campus and Shibir strongholds in the city early yesterday.
They also seized bomb making materials, four sharp weapons and a hammer during the raids.
The raids were launched following two cases filed by the police with Motihar Police Station, accusing 84 Shibir men of attacking a police camp, exploding bombs and hurling stones and bricks at the law enforcers during Saturday's violence at Binodpur near the university.
Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station and Inspector Abdul Mannan, in-charge of RU Police camp, lodged the cases.
The accused in the cases include RU Shibir President Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, General Secretary Shamsul Alam Golap, and Shibir city unit President Nur Muhammad Mondol.
Police divided into several groups raided student messes near RU campus and Shibir dominated areas around Rajshahi Medical College, Rajshahi College and Institute of Health Technology in the city.
The arrested shibir activists are Abdus Samad, a second year student of physics department, Afsarul Islam, a first year student of geology and mining department, Shariful Islam, a fourth year student of social work department, Habibur Rahman , a first year student of zoology department, Moshiur Rahman, a third year student of statistics department, Maruful Islam, a second year student of Islamic studies department of Rajshahi University, Asrafuzzaman, a second year student of chemistry department, Zaharul Islam, a third year student of accounting department, Abdullah-Al-Zobayer, a first year student of mathematics department, Imamul Huda, a third year student of zoology department of Rajshahi College, Rezaul Karim, a final year student of Institute of Health Technology, Arafat Ali, a second year student of New Government Degree College, Jewel Rana, a schoolboy and two outsiders, Zaharul Haque and Ahsan Ali.
Jahangir Hossain, assistant police commissioner, said drive to arrest the accused will continue.
