'Country's uplift not possible without trial of war criminals'
The government should hold the trial of war criminals without any delay, said Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Col (retd) Shawkat Ali at a discussion yesterday.
“If digital Bangladesh means developing the country quickly, then we must hold the trial of war criminals in a digital way,” he added.
The discussion was organised by Projonmo'71 at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium.
Unless the war criminals are tried, the development of the country will not take place, said AL presidium member Abdur Razzak.
“Those who took part in the liberation war under compulsion cannot be a freedom fighter in real sense. Those who do not believe in the spirit of the war cannot be a real freedom fighter,” he said.
He said the war criminals were involved in the politics depending on these so-called freedom fighters.
“In this election people have given us mandate to try the war criminals and parliament has passed a proposal in this regard. So we must take advantage of this situation,” he added.
“In the past Jamaat-e-Islami advanced in the field of politics due to our inactive attitude over the issue. Now we have got a chance to try them and we do not want to see us ineffective any more,” said former chairman of Muktijoddha Sangsad Abdul Ahad Chowdhury.
Prof Gazi Salahuddin, lawmaker Nazma Akter and journalist Joyonto Acharya also spoke at the discussion.
