'6 silos to be set up to stockpile food grains'
Food Minister Abdur Razzak yesterday said the government has taken an initiative to set up around six warehouses in the country having the capacities of keeping five lakh metric tons of food grains to increase the food security of the country.
The government will allocate funds in the next budget to construct three warehouses in the first phase, the minister said after a meeting with Saudi Ambassador Abdullah Bin Naser Al-Bushairi in the ministry.
He said the granaries will be constructed at Mongla having the capacity of 50,000 metric tons, in Postogola one lakh metric tons and in northern region having capacity of 10,000 metric tons will be constructed initially.
The minister said around 15 lakh metric tons of food grains can be stored in the granaries now, but their actual capacities are 12 lakh metric tons.
He said at least 20 to 22 lakh metric tons of food grains need to be stored to ensure proper food security, adding that the government would build more silos to store another six lakh metric tons of grains.
Razzak said the millers have started collecting grains from domestic markets from May 1, he said.
