Need for exhibiting heritage stressed
Speakers at a discussion yesterday underscored the need for exhibiting the country's history and heritage to the tourists and attracting more tourists with the help of the museums.
Liberation War Museum organised the discussion at its auditorium in the city yesterday to mark World Museum Day, which was observed on Monday.
This year the theme of the day was 'Museum and Tourism'.
Trustee of Liberation War Museum Dr Sarwar Ali said that museums should not only bear the history of a nation but should also allow people to connect themselves with the contemporary events.
He said that initiatives can be taken to make different places of the country, especially that are related to the liberation war, attractive to the tourists.
“The places can be preserved and measures can be taken to attract more visitors to these places,” he added.
Lauding the initiative of Liberation War Museum, International Councils of Museum (ICoM)-Bangladesh President Prof Mahmudul Haq said although Bangladesh is a developing country it cannot afford individual museum for all the sectors.
He stressed building an effective relationship between common people and the museums.
In his keynote, Hasan Mansur, former president of Tour Operators' Association of Bangladesh, said 81.9 million tourists travelled to France in 2007, the highest in the world.
The statistics show the importance of the museums, he added.
He gave details of 25 museums across Bangladesh and regretted that the museums do not have any records.
Liberation War Museum Trustee and Member Secretary Mafidul Haq delivered the vote of thanks.
A documentary titled 'Frozen Tears' was also screened on the occasion.
