Call to stop construction of Tipaimukh Dam
Different organisations yesterday strongly protested and condemned the construction of Tipaimukh Dam on Borak River in India saying that it would cause serious havoc in northeastern region in Bangladesh.
They demanded immediate cancellation of the project to protect the ecology, agriculture, biodiversity and navigation of the country.
They also protested and criticised the comment of Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty and said his comment is not sustaining in terms of general or technical aspects.
The high commissioner on Tuesday said that India would construct Tipaimukh Dam to generate electricity, which would not cause any harm to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, in a statement, said the water flow in Surma and Kushiara Rivers will decrease significantly in the winter season and would lead to desertification process if the dam were constructed. On the other hand, the entire area will go down water when the gates of the dam will be opened in the rainy season, they said.
They demanded of the government to place their demands to refrain from constructing the dam and place the demands in the international forum if needed.
Angikar Bangladesh Foundation said it would not be improper to say such behaviour of India 'imperialistic' as they want to construct the huge project virtually without any consultation with Bangladesh.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) and Amra Bangladeshi also protested the move.
The organisations, in separate statements, called upon the democratic and patriotic forces to raise voice against the looming crisis.
