Shibir backed by outsiders flexes muscles at RU

Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir accompanied by outsiders yesterday flexed muscles on Rajshahi University campus, creating panic among students, teachers and employees.
Although RU proctor's office earlier imposed restriction on processions, rallies, meetings and gatherings on the campus for indefinite period, the university authorities and a large number of police present on the campus did not take any action during yesterday's incident.
Shibir Bangabandhu Hall unit President Shah Newaz Sachho and its Suhrawardi Hall unit President Tafsir Ahmed led the Shibir show off in presence of police in the morning, witnesses said.
The Shibir men searched for BCL leaders and activists on the campus.
At around 12:30pm, a group of Shibir activists led by Sachho took position at a place conventionally used by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) RU unit men.
Shibir leaders and activists kept on occupying the place for two hours.
BCL activists informed police and the university proctor about Shibir's provocative acts but to no effect.
“Shibir tried to create panic among general students and instigate BCL men for fresh clash on the campus,” BCL RU leader Ershad told newsmen.
Several teachers of RU have demanded that the university authorities and police administration take immediate action against the Shibir activists who are trying to create panic among teachers and students before reopening of the university.
Asked about yesterday's incident, RU Proctor Prof Zakaria told this correspondent that he was not aware of 'Shibir showdown'.
Earlier on April 23, RU proctor's office formed a 15-point action policy including indefinite ban on rallies and processions to keep RU campus violence-free.
