Work to prepare new list of FFs begins today
Work to prepare a new list of freedom fighters kicks off today.
Advertisements calling upon people to identify fake freedom fighters will be telecast and published in the newspapers from today to this end.
A gazette will be published in August that will have the names of the freedom fighters after hearing the appeal of the convicted persons.
“New identity card will be given to each freedom fighter who will be treated as a very important person (VIP) after preparing the new list,” State Minister for the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs Capt (retd) ABM Tajul Islam said yesterday.
While talking to a private television channel, the state minister said no government managed to prepare an authentic list of freedom fighters since the independence.
So far five lists of freedom fighters have been made, he said.
Number of freedom fighters was 1,02,458 in the first list prepared by the national committee while the number of freedom fighters shrunk to 69,833 in the list prepared by the Muktijoddha Kalyan Trust.
The number rose to 1.86 lakh in 1996 according to a new list prepared by Muktibarta.
Finally number of freedom fighters increased to 2.10 lakh during the tenure of immediate past BNP-Jamaat four-party alliance government.
ABM Tajul Islam said all the previous lists of freedom fighters will be null and void when the new one comes into effect.
Earlier in March, Jatiya Sangsad adopted a resolution calling upon the government to prepare a new list of freedom fighters deleting names of all fake freedom fighters.
