Water crisis grips Satkhira town
Scarcity of drinking water has turned serious in Satkhira municipality for the last few days as the authorities are now supplying only half of the water required for over one lakh 25 thousand people in the area.
Water cannot be lifted regularly from the pumps as they remain inoperative most of the time due to load shedding and voltage fluctuation, sources said.
Residents of Katia, Rasulpur, Mehedibagh, Masterpara, Palashpole, Raispur, Baddipur Colony, and Itagachha areas are worst sufferers due to water crisis. Patients at Satkhira Sadar hospital and other private clinics suffer a lot due to scarcity of drinking water.
There are 6,027 water connections for the residents in the municipality and the authorities are supplying 4,368 cubic litres of water against the demand of about 8,438 cubic litres, sources said.
As underground water level declines in dry season, most of the water pumps remain inoperative during the period, municipality Commissioner Safiquddowla Sagar said.
The ongoing work by the municipality authorities to install water pumps in Shahid Abdur Razzak Park area is expected to complete within 15 days and then the problem will be solved to some extend, he said.
