Boy beaten up by stepfather dies in hosptial
A twelve-year-old boy, who was severely beaten up by his stepfather and left untreated for seven days at their slum house, succumbed to his injuries Thursday night at Pongu hospital in the capital.
The deceased, Shah Alam, was a student of a school run by an NGO at Korail slum in Gulshan.
Witnesses said Billal Hossain hit Alam with bricks and also beat him up over a trifling matter at their slum house on May 1, leaving him critically injured.
However, injured Alam was not taken to any hospital and even he did not receive any treatment since then.
As the condition of Alam deteriorated, he was taken to the Pongu Hospital Thursday evening. He died there after a few hours of his admission.
The body of Alam was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Police said Billal, a rickshaw puller, went into hiding following the death of Alam.
Sub-inspector (SI) Jahangir Hossain of Gulshan police station said both Billal and the boy's mother had married several times.
