PW gives deposition, Mufti Hannan produced in court
A trial court in Sylhet yesterday took deposition of a prosecution witness (PW) in the case for bomb blast that killed three young men hours ahead of Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina's election rally in the city on September 26 of 2001.
With yesterday's deposition of Abdus Salam, a resident of the city's Fazil Chist area, deposition of four out of 23 PWs in the case has been recorded.
Judge Humayun Kabir, the additional district and sessions judge-IV of Sylhet, also a special tribunal judge, fixed June 10 for recording of deposition of the other PWs.
Charge-sheeted in the case, Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJi) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his accomplice Abu Sayeed were produced before the court yesterday while two other accused -- Obaida Hasan and Sheikh Shahjahan had been absconding. Dr Momtaj Ahmed Rifa, also an accused in the case, has been on bail from the High Court.
The case started in connection with the blast that killed three young men during preparation of bombs at the house of physician-cum-businessman Dr Arif Ahmed Momtaz Rifa at the city's Fajil Chist area on September 26 of 2001.
Immediately after the incident that took place apparently due to careless handling of the powerful explosives, a few bomb makers managed to escape. However, pedestrians caught one of them, when he was fleeing with injuries.
The bombs were being made for using in attack on Sheikh Hasina as she had an election rally at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa ground that evening, police said.
