Can't We Just Stop it?
Dark as soy sauce and emitting a chemical stench, the rivers surrounding Dhaka has been polluted to the extent that they can be pronounced dead. Dhaka's indiscriminate industrial waste discharge and unplanned sewerage system have chased away the last bit of life from the Balu, Buriganga and Turag. Water of these three rivers is now beyond usable state as Dhaka Wasa now supplies water to the city from the river Shitalkhya, which is also drifting towards a similar fate. Photo: Syed Zakir Hossain
