'End discrimination against women'
It is not possible to ensure development of the country unless discrimination between men and women is eliminated from society, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said while inaugurating a painting competition yesterday.
He also urged all to change their mindset towards girl children in their families.
He said discrimination starts in the family. So, families should come forward to combat violence against women.
Nari Maitree, a rights organisation, arranged the competition at Ramna Park in the city with the theme 'We can stop violence against women' to raise awareness about the issue.
Some 22 students of Fine Art Institute of DU took part in the competition.
Delivering the welcome address, Shahin Akter Dolly, executive director of Nari Maitree, called on women to raise their voice against discrimination, saying that most women tolerate torture on them in the name of maintaining peace in the family.
She also urged men to come forward to remove discrimination against women from society.
Prof Dr Farida Zaman, Kazi Faruk, treasurer of National University, and Sajeda Begum, vice president of Nari Maitree, also spoke.
