BNP rejects notice, threatens movement
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday rejected the notice issued to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia that asked her to leave cantonment residence within 15 days.
He called on the government to withdraw the notice immediately.
Terming the notice a “politically motivated steps”, Delwar threatened to forge a tough movement across the country if the notice is not withdrawn soon.
“We have repeatedly appealed to the government to cancel its 'illegal' decision regarding Khaleda's residence. But they did not pay attention, rather issued a notice asking Khaleda to leave the residence. Now we would do whatever necessary to remain it,” Delwar said while addressing a protest rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in the city.
The cabinet on April 8 cancelled the lease of Khaleda's cantonment residence and asked the BNP chairperson on Monday to vacate it within 15 days.
JCD President Azizul Baree Helal at the rally threatened to forge a tough movement, including hartal, to compel the government to step down if the notice is not withdrawn immediately.
Delwar said if the government does not cancel its decision and withdraw the notice, a 'chaotic' situation would prevail in the country and it has to take all responsibilities of the situation.
“The notice is illegal and nothing but a politically motivated step to embarrass Khaleda,” he said, adding that the government should put an end to the issue and concentrate on the betterment of the countrymen by resolving various crises, including power and water.
The BNP secretary general blamed the government for its 'failure' to complete the investigation into the Pilkhana carnage on February 25-26, saying that committing suicides by BDR men after the carnage has raised a question in people's minds.
BNP leader Amanullah Aman criticised the foreign and home ministers for their role and demanded resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
BNP lawmakers Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Ani and Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, leaders Mirza Abbas and Ilias Ali and top JCD leaders also spoke.
BNP workers and JCD men brought out a protest procession after the rally.
