US to help preserve Sundarbans
A dialogue was held on future management of the Sundarbans Reserve Forest in Khulna yesterday.
The United States government sponsored the dialogue.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh James F Moriarty, Md Shah Alam, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Dr Mihir Kanti Mazumder, secretary of Ministry of Environment and Forest, Md Delwar Hossain, secretary of Ministry of Land and USAID Mission Director Denise Rollins spoke at the dialogue.
Civil society leaders, members of the business community, government officials, and local residents also spoke.
Ambassador Moriarty commended the Bangladesh government's initiatives to join hand with local communities in protecting and conserving natural resources and biodiversity of the Sundarbans.
The envoy reiterated the US government's commitment to help preserve protected areas such as the Sundarbans.
In 2008, the US government initiated a US$ 12.7 million environment programme called the Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) project. The project sites are in Sylhet, Teknaf, Modhupur, Sundarbans and Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The project will contribute in sustainable management of natural resources and conserving forests and wetlands.
