RU Shibir stages fresh showdown on campus
Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists along with outsiders staged a big showdown on the Rajshahi University (RU) campus yesterday that created panic among the teachers, officers and employees.
Witnesses said the Shibir activists, divided into four groups, took out silent processions on the campus at 11:30am.
Shibir RU unit published a two-page colour leaflet with photos of BCL men carrying arms on the campus.
They, led by Shibir Bangabandhu Hall president Sachchu and Suhrawardy Hall president Tafsir Ahmed, went to different faculties, departments, administrative building and halls and distributed the leaflets.
In the leaflets, the Shibir cadres held RU authorities and BCL men jointly responsible for the killing of their leader Sharifuzzaman Nomani on the campus on March 13 and urged the people to resist the BCL cadres.
Later, they gathered in front of Bangabandhu Hall. Hearing the news, police and proctor rushed to hall but Shibir cadres left the place, sensing presence of the law enforcers.
Many teachers, officers and employees of the university expressed concern over Shibir's showdown on the campus. They said the Shibir with the help of outsiders are trying to create panic among the teachers, employees and students.
Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Motihar Police Station, said police will investigate the matter and arrest the Shibir activists responsible for distributing leaflets on the campus.
Proctor Prof Zakaria told newsman that the university authorities would take legal action against the Shibir men.
The RU authorities closed the university indefinitely on March 13 following a clash between BCL and Shibir that left RU Shibir leader Sharifuzzaman Nomani dead and 100 others injured.
