Sharp weapons recovered from DU hall
Police recovered 12 sharp weapons including machetes, swords and knives from Mohsin Hall at Dhaka University early yesterday.
Law enforcers raided the hall at around 3:00am following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Awami League, over gaining control of Mohsin Hall, sources said.
During the two-hour-long raid police searched about 50 rooms and recovered four swords, two machetes, two knives, four other sharp weapons and 32 iron rods, sources added.
Most of the weapons were recovered from the rooms of BCL leaders and activists.
Police also rounded up six outsiders but later released them after the detainees provided the university authorities and the law enforcers with satisfactory reasons for staying at the hall.
Sources said two BCL factions -- one loyal to DU unit BCL President Sohel Rana Tipu and another to its General Secretary Sajjad Saqib Badsha, clashed at around 2:30am in the dormitory compound.
Tension was brewing between the two factions over getting a tender for development work of the hall for the last three days, sources added.
Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told The Daily Star that police conducted the raid following the university authorities' request.
