Genuine list of freedom fighters on cards

JS passes move

The House yesterday unanimously passed a resolution pleading the government to prepare a list of genuine freedom fighters by erasing the fake ones from the existing list.
Speaker Abdul Hamid accepted the proposal as the state minister for liberation war affairs informed the House that the ministry would take measures to delete the names of fake freedom fighters on the list.
After a discussion on a private members' resolution, the speaker placed the proposal for voting and the lawmakers voted for it.
Awami League (AL) lawmaker Israfil Alam moved the proposal to cross out fake names from the Naogaon district freedom fighter list and also urged to include the ones who actually fought in the Liberation War. Some treasury and opposition bench lawmakers also urged for similar amendments in their respective constituencies.
In response to the lawmakers' proposals, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs BM Tajul Islam said since the country's independence, five lists of freedom fighters had been prepared.
The BNP-Jamaat led alliance government also prepared a list of freedom fighters enlisting many fake ones. The then government also deleted many names of real freedom fighters from the list, he said.
“We will scrutinise the list to drop the fake names at district and upazila levels and include names of true freedom fighters in it,” said the state minister.
