Bagerhat-1 By-polls

Sheikh Helal elected MP uncontested

Awami League's Sheikh Helaluddin has been unofficially declared elected lawmaker from Bagerhat-1 (Fakirhat-Mollahat and Chitalmari) constituency, as there was no other contender against him for the by-election scheduled for April 2.
Returning Officer Md Mohsin Ali rejected the nomination papers of two other contenders of the constituency during scrutiny but none of them filed any appeal petition against the rejection.
The two contenders are: Mushfequr Rahman Sajol of BNP and Obaidur Rahman, an independent candidate.
Mohsin Ali told this correspondent that official announcement in this regard would be made today.
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina earlier vacated this seat.
Sheikh Helal could not contest the parliamentary elections held on December 29 last year, being convicted in corruption and extortion cases filed against him by Anti-Corruption Commission.
The High Court granted him bail on January 12 this year in both the cases in which he was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment in total during the last caretaker government's rule.
Sheikh Helal, the eldest son of late Sheikh Nasser Rahman, younger brother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was elected lawmaker in the by-election held in 1996 and the national election in 2001 from Bagerhat-1 constituency.
