Border guards well on duty
Routine activities of the border security force resumed at all Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) camps across the country yesterday as normalcy returned after the massacre of BDR men in its headquarters in Dhaka.
BDR members have started their routine work in bordering areas across the country as peaceful environment prevails at the BDR camps, officials concerned confirmed.
The 3-day national mourning was also being observed at the camps and border outposts (BOP) to mourn the death of army officers during 33-hour mutiny by rebellious BDR men.
Our correspondent from Sylhet adds: Normalcy has returned to the 700 km border with India in Sylhet region from Saturday afternoon.
Four battalions of BDR have started their routine work in 80 BOPs of the region, sources said. The border guards left their two camps in Gowainghat and Kanaighat upazilas for several hours during the mutiny in Dhaka.
The metropolitan police commissioner and deputy commissioner took over the armoury of the sector headquarters in the city's Akhalia area Friday night.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent reports: Routine work and border patrolling have started at Thakurgaon and Panchagarh battalion headquarters and BOPs.
The battalion sources confirmed that no BDR soldier fled the camps after the mutiny.
But the commanding officer did not return to the battalion headquarters yesterday, according to the sources.
When contacted, Colonel S. Shahed Kamal, Commanding Officer of 20 Rifles Battalion told The Daily Star that they are yet to get any directives from the high-ups though the deputy assistant director is maintaining contact with him in this regard.
Our correspondent from Rajshahi adds: BDR soldiers at the BOPs of Rajshahi sector have started patrolling along with the borders with small numbers of jawans.
On Saturday, only five BDR men were seen patrolling in about 10 km of Char Majardia frontier, about eight km off to the south from Rajshahi city, sources said.
“We have no guidance from the upper level since the mutiny. We are working like previous to protect the country's territory,” said Subedar Sohrab Hossain, commander of Khar Chaka BOP.
Our Rangamati correspondent adds: Peaceful situation prevails at the BDR cams in Rangamati after Deputy Commissioner Md. Nurul Amin and Police Super Masud-ul-Hassan visited the district BDR headquarters and talked to the army officers and jawans.
Lt Col Shamim, commanding officer (CO) of Barkal upazila, is discharging his duty as acting sector commander of Rangamati after Sector Commander Col Kazi Moazzem Hossain was killed during the mutiny in BDR headquarters.
Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports: the border situation became normal in the district yesterday. But BDR sources said they are yet to get any directives from BDR headquarters though no officer joined the battalion.
Kamal Hossain, Deputy Assistant Director of 39 Rifles Battalion, said, the activities of the battalion are being carried out under the supervision of the deputy commissioner and police super.
Our Benapole correspondent adds: BDR men joined their routine works at all 17 BDR camps in the bordering areas yesterday.
