Shirin stays ahead
Sharmin Sultana Shirin crossed a major barrier in the 30th Parachute National Women's Chess Championship when she defeated last year's runner-up WFM Shamima Akhter Liza in the sixth round at the federation hall-room yesterday.
Shirin, yet to lose a match, stayed atop the table with six points. Playing with white pieces against Liza's Sami-Slav Defence, Shirin won the board at 38 moves.
Reigning champion IWM Rani Hamid and Masuda Begum shared second place with five points each while Liza stuck to 4.5 points.
In other matches, Rani beat Rokshana Titli, Masuda beat Nazrana Khan Eva, WFM Zakia Sultana beat Farjana Hossain Anne, Jahanara Haque Runu beat Amena Khatun and Protiva Talukder drew with Ahely Sarkar.
