Call to promote use of logic
The Ice Cool-Prothom Alo 6th National Debate Festival began in the city yesterday with a call to promote the use of logical reasoning to help strengthen democracy.
Inaugurating the three-day festival at Shishu Academy, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni emphasised the need to help develop the analytical and logical skills of the new generation, thereby helping the country move forward.
Some 1200 debaters from 200 educational institutions across the country are taking part in the festival.
Speaking as the special guest, former adviser to the caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury said practising logical argumentation in families is a healthy culture which helps children to grow up with strong moral principles.
She called on the students to achieve the highest position in society and work to ensure the rights of underprivileged children.
Appreciating such a great initiative to promote debating activities, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said debate will help students to sharpen their logical skills and generate diversity of ideas.
Prothom Alo Joint Editor Abdul Qaiyum said, "Debating activities help develop our intellect, just as physical exercises help us keep fit."
"We only can change ourselves and society through the use of logic and truth," he added.
Later, the organisers took out a colourful procession that paraded different streets. All the debaters took part in the procession.
