RU pro-AL teachers, staff allege acting VC's Jamaat link
Pro-Awami League (AL) teachers, officers and employees of Rajshahi University staged demonstrations in front of the acting vice-chancellor's office on Thursday demanding his immediate resignation for his alleged link to Jamaat-e-Islami.
About 200 pro-AL teachers under the banner of Progressive Teachers Society (PTS), led by its Convener Prof Mozaffar Hossain, joined the programme, alleging that acting VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat has taken an initiative to appoint pro-Jamaat teacher Prof Joynul Abedin as director of the Institute of Bangladesh Studies (IBS).
They also condemned the acting VC as he recently appointed a teacher loyal to BNP-Jamaat as provost of Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
The agitating teachers left the scene after the acting VC assured them that he would appoint IBS director in consultation with them.
Later, PTS teachers at a press conference at deans' complex urged the government to immediately appoint a full-fledged vice-chancellor at the university.
Pro-AL officer and employees also demonstrated in front of the acting vice-chancellor's office the same day demanding his resignation.
They alleged that the acting VC has appointed some 'controversial' teachers, officers and employees violating university rules.
