Old building's ceiling breaks off partially
Three women sustained injuries as a large portion of the ceiling of a century-old building collapsed last night in the city's Shankharibazar.
The injured were Kanchanlata, 65, her daughter Anjali Sen, 42 and her grand daughter Popi Shur.
Pakhi Sen, husband of Anjali Sen, said a large portion of the ceiling fell on the victims when they were sitting on the bed around 8:30.
The injured were taken to Mitford hospital.
Locals said the building was earlier Madan Mohan Mandir, a temple. During the Liberation War the Pakistani occupation forces set fire to it. It was left abandoned and after liberation some Hindu families started living there risking their lives.
In 2004, at least 11 people were killed and several others sustained injuries as another old structure collapsed in the area.
