Mirpur Freedom Day was observed at Mirpur in the city yesterday with a call to try war criminals.
Mirpur was liberated 44 days after the independence of the country.
Marking the freedom day, Liberation War Museum held a discussion and cultural programme on the Jollad Khana (killing ground) premise at Mirpur.
Inaugurating the programme, Rabiul Hossain, architect of the Jollad Khana monument, gave welcome address while locals recalled the memory of the terrible attack on the freedom fighters on January 30 in 1972.
Rabiul thanked the incumbent government for working out the process for trial of war criminals in the country.
The organisers also screened two films titled, “Al Badar' and 'War Crimes File' at the programme.

He said “It was unimaginable for the freedom fighters of an attack in Dhaka city after 44 days of independence.” The attackers killed at least one hundred of freedom fighters in January 30 in 1972, he added.
Panna Kaiser, wife of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser, said renowned filmmaker Zahir Raihan was one of the victims of the attack of January 30. She thanked the government for emphasising on the trial of war criminals within a week of taking power.
