'Case filed to harass BNP supporters'
An Awami League supporter has filed a 'false' case against 22 BNP supporters in a bid to harass them so that they cannot cast their votes for the pro-BNP chairman candidate in the re-election to Chowhali Upazila Parishad.
The BNP supporters said this at a press conference in Sirajganj town yesterday.
The voting will be held at Chowhali Degree College polling centre again as the January 22 election in the upazila was postponed following allegations of massive election irregularities.
The BNP supporters said the AL workers are also warning them not to work for the pro-BNP candidate Mahfuza Khatun. As a result, feeling of insecurity has gripped the BNP men.
On behalf of the 22 BNP supporters, Shahidur Rahman read out a written statement at the press conference.
He alleged that supporters of pro-AL chairman candidate Abu Bakkar Siddique snatched 100 ballot papers from Chowhali Degree College polling centre during the voting on January 22.
Following the incident, the authorities postponed the election.
Shahidur said Abdus Salam, a supporter of the pro-AL candidate, filed the case with Chowhali police station on January 23 so that the 22 BNP supporters cannot work for Mahfuza Khatun.
He also urged the authorities concerned to investigate the incident and take necessary steps in this regard.
