Ctg constable suspended for misbehaviour with lawmaker
A police constable was suspended temporarily in the port city yesterday on charge of misbehaving with a newly elected Awami League lawmaker.
The constable was identified as Akhter Hossain of Bandar Police Station.
Sources said Akhter was beating a CNG-passenger Suman, an expatriate in Oman, in Bandartila area while he was returning home from Shah Amanat International Airport at around 11:00am.
While crossing the area, lawmaker M Abdul Latif noticed the incident and got down from his vehicle to know the matter.
As the lawmaker tried to know what actually happened, the constable misbehaved with him. Local people grew angry at the incident and tried to beat the policeman, they added.
Police said the constable was temporarily suspended, while Assistant Commissioner (Port) Mostak Ahmed was directed to investigate the matter.
While checking vehicles in the Cement Crossing area, a team of Bandar Police Station led by SI Jahangir ordered the auto-rickshaw to stop but it passed the area neglecting the order.
At one stage, the on-duty constable stopped a vehicle and got into it to chase the auto and managed to stop it in Bandartila area.
He acknowledged the matter, saying that the constable was beating up the auto-driver and paid no heed to the lawmaker as he could not recognise him.
The lawmaker said, “The police did not care of my enquiry even after I gave my identity.”
He alleged that policemen in the area usually harass the home-bound passengers.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman, Deputy Commissioner (Port) Sakhawat Hossain and senior officials went to the spot and ensured Latif of taking departmental action against the constable.
