Dev D Sarat Chandra’s classic anti-hero gets a Generation Y makeover
“Dev D” is a re-imagining of the classic Sarat Chandra novel “Devdas”, representing a generation that is torn between eastern roots and western sensibilities.
“Dev D" is a modern-day interpretation of the classic novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra. The main characters Dev, Paro and Chanda reflect the sensibilities, conflicts, aggression, exuberance and recklessness that define the Generation Y -- a generation that is torn between eastern roots and western sensibilities.
Dev D is set in the rustic and colourful Punjab and also explores the dingy, morbid, dark underbelly of Delhi -- from sprawling mustard fields to a riot of neon. Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, "Dev D" has been produced by UTV Spotboy.
Dev: Son of a rich industrialist, sent away to London at the age of 12, Dev (played by Abhay Deol) returns to his hometown and to Paro, his childhood sweetheart. Inseparable as they seem, a momentary rush of blood puts their lives in a tizzy; Paro is married off to someone else and Dev goes into severe depression. Not one to take on responsibilities for his acts, Dev digs deep into drugs and alcohol for salvation. He stays away from home but his finances still come from a doting father. An escapist instinct and a massive ego leads him into an aimless search for lost love that pushes him further into an abyss of darkness and hopelessness soaked in self pity.
Paro: Dev's neighbour and childhood friend Paro (Mahi Gill) is a free spirit riding high on life with nothing but an indestructible faith in her love for Dev. That faith is shattered in a major turn of events and she is resigned to marry an older man with children. Paro picks up the threads of her life and moves on with a lot of grit and dignity and she hopes Dev can do the same.
Chanda: Leni (Kalki Koechlin) -- an affluent college student with hyperactive hormones and a penchant for adventure -- likes to live on the edge. After a devastating MMS scandal she's abandoned by her family and is forced into isolation. As a runaway she finds shelter with Chunni, a pimp. With great determination and inner strength she adopts an alter ego -- Chanda. As Chanda, she remains a college student by day and becomes a high profile escort by night. With coke in her head and money at her disposal, Leni/Chanda lives life on her own terms.
