CU journalism teacher commits suicide
Dr Andrew Alok Dewary, an assistant professor of Chittagong University, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his house at Mirzapul in the port city of Chittagong yesterday.
Dr Dewary, 46, of communication and journalism department committed suicide between 10:00am and 11:00am when all other family members were out of the house.
His wife Shikha Rani Biswas, a senior staff nurse of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), found the door locked from inside after she returned from her workplace at around 11:00am. She repeatedly knocked on the door but did not get any response.
She then informed the police who broke open the door only to find Dr Dewary hanging from the ceiling fan.
Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Panchlaish Zone Syed Mezbah Hossain said they broke open the door in presence of the family members.
"We are initially suspecting that this might be a case of suicide and an unnatural death case will be filed in this connection. We have also found three suicide notes in the room. We would start investigation after receiving the autopsy report," he said.
In the suicide notes, Dr Dewary mentioned that no-one is responsible for his death.
"Disturbance and complications I am facing at my workplace are the main reasons behind my suicide. I make my apologies to everyone," read a note.
"My wife is a nice woman. She has no fault. Tension and depression made me a mental patient. Suicide is hereditary in our family. My cousin also committed suicide few days ago," he wrote.
Dr Dewary's son Pavel is a college student and daughter Aapala is a student of class IX.
The body would be sent to his village home in Barisal today after autopsy, said Communication and Journalism Department Chairman Mir Mosharraf Hossain.
He also said that all classes and examinations of the department scheduled for today have been postponed.
Dr Dewary, author of five books, also worked with Bangladesh Railway as a public relations officer in Rajshahi before joining the CU journalism department in 2001.
BSS adds: Teachers of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University at a meeting yesterday expressed deep shock at the death of Dr Dewary.
The country lost a progressive teacher and columnist at his death, they said in a statement.
