8 killed as truck rams microbus
At least eight people were killed and two others injured in a road accident at Chalerghat on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway under Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district yesterday morning.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at about 7:15am when a Dhaka-bound microbus from Muktagachha collided head-on with a Haluaghat-bound truck from Dhaka killing eight of its passengers on the spot and injuring two others critically.
Of the dead, seven were identified as microbus driver Sohel, 35, Ayen Uddin, 35, Habibur Rahman, 35, Mustafizur Rahman, 32, and Abdus Salam, 40, all form Muktagachha upazila, Hasan, 40, of Haluaghat upazila, and Shahar Ali, 40, of Chetulia of Jamalpur district.
However, identity of other victim could not be known till filing of this report at 4:00pm.
The microbus was totally smashed after being hit by the killer truck.
According to sources, the deceased were the distributors of Destiny Group's local branch and were going to join the group's 8th founding anniversary scheduled to be held in Dhaka.
Critically injured Harun-or- Rashid, 42, and Faizur Rahman, 26, both from Haluaghat, were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
The bodies were sent to MMCH morgue for autopsy.
Police seized the truck but the driver managed to escape.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Ziaur Rahman Khan, Additional Police Superintendent Aktaruzzaman, Assistant Superintendent of Police Raihan Uddin visited the spot.
