UMC Jute Mills workers stage demonstration for arrears, bonus
The workers and employees of state owned UMC Jute Mills yesterday staged a demonstration demanding arrears and bonus.
About 4,500 workers and employees stopped work at 2:00pm, brought out a procession and staged a sit-in in front of the guesthouse where the general manager was staying. They also reportedly assaulted the deputy general manager (finance) and confined him to his office.
Senior officials of the administration rushed to the spot and assuaged the angry workers with assurance to meet their demands.
Wages of workers remained unpaid for nine weeks and officers and employees for five months.
