Dec 29 polls free, fair
President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday said the December 29 elections were free and fair.
"I am thanking the almighty Allah and congratulating the countrymen for holding the 9th parliamentary election on December 29 freely and fairly," the president said.
"Soon an elected government will take the reins of the country, I wish them all the best," he said.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 14th Dhaka International Trade Fair at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital.
He congratulated the winning party and all the members of the parliament elected in the elections on December 29.
He also praised everybody concerned with the entire election process for a successful conduct of the vote.
Awami League-led grand alliance got a landslide victory in Monday's polls. However, on Wednesday, BNP said the election results were stage-managed and unacceptable.
Foreign election observers of different organisations, European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM), Commonwealth Observer Group, National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Asian Network for Free Elections (Anfrel) Foundation, said they did not find any instance of "election manipulation" as alleged by BNP.
