37 bombs seized; 3 more JMB men held
At least 37 bombs were recovered from various places in Rajshahi, Naogaon, Jessore and Meherpur while three suspected JMB members were detained in Panchagarh yesterday.
Meanwhile, the eight JMB operatives, arrested in Gaibandha with a big cache of explosives on Thursday, were placed on a five-day police remand.
SM Moniruzzaman, superintendent of police in Gaibandha, told The Daily Star that the detained operatives of outlawed Islamist outfit JMB were being interrogated.
Col Gulzaruddin Ahmed, additional director general of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), said they were making preparation to interrogate the eight JMB men under the Taskforce Intelligence (TFI).
Gaibandha police arrested the eight JMB men in Sadar and Gobindaganj upazilas with 50 casings of grenade, grenade-making materials, huge explosives and books on jihad.
The JMB members are Rezaul Karim Reji alias Hasan alias Shihab, Manjurul Islam Manju, Al Amin, Mostafizur Rahman, Nannu Mia, Rowshan Ali, Amzad Hosain and Obaidur Rahman.
Of them, Obaidur and Amzad are madrasa teachers while Reji is the regional commander of the banned militant outfit.
Meanwhile, two other JMB men, arrested with five grenades and a 10kg bomb at Nabiadi village in Comilla, were brought to Dhaka for interrogation by the TFI. They had been placed on an eight-day remand on Thursday.
Our Rajshahi University correspondent reports: Detective Branch of Police (DB) with the help of Boalia police recovered 25 bombs from a private dormitory named Montu Mia Student Residence at Meherchandi, adjacent to Rajshahi University (RU).
Police also arrested five RU students for interrogation.
They are Shibir activists Ruhul Amin and Rafiqul Islam, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist Kamrul Hassan and Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Habib and Rashid.
Police said they raided the building early in the morning and recovered the bombs wrapped in red and black tapes.
Sub-inspector of Motihar Police Station Alamgir said the homemade bombs are powerful.
DB Assistant Police Commissioner Mafuzur Rahman said someone might have hidden the bombs there to carry out acts of sabotage in the upcoming election.
A correspondent from Benapole adds: Police recovered three powerful bombs from the residence of Awami League activist Mobarok Hossain at Sarsa upazila in the morning.
Explosives-experts of the army defused the bombs.
On December 21, Rab recovered 10 kgs of gunpowder at Goga Kaliani village.
Our Meherpur correspondent reports: Rab recovered three one-kg bombs last night near Chak Shyamnagar School of Mujibnagar upazila in the district.
Lt Col Nur Mohammad Tariq Aziz of Rab said a group of criminals being chased by Rab members left the bombs there at about 8:00pm.
BSS reports: The police recovered six bombs from the house of Saiful at Hapania Bazar in Naogaon and arrested his wife Mina Begum, son Shahid and sister Mazeda Begum in this connection.
Police said Saiful is a member of a robber gang.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent adds: Panchagarh police yesterday arrested three suspected JMB operatives at Dokrapara in the town.
They are Mohammad Nazrul Islam, 23, of Barokumulia village, Zakir Hossain, 26, and Mohammad Anisuzzaman, 24, of Kolatia village.
Zamir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Police Station, said they arrested the youths at about 10:00am for their suspicious movements.
